AN INVESTMENT IN AGRICULTURE IS AN INVESTMENT IN PUERTO RICO'S SUSTAINABILITY
Local campaigns can be developed to support local famers and the tourist industry can adopt ratings for local consumption of products. Support of agriculture is an Island-wide initiative that improves nutritional offerings, promotes local economy and reduces dependence on non-Puerto Rican crops and products.

Recent growth of small coffee and organic farms around the island has shown that Puerto Rico‘s land is capable of large scale crop production. UPR has conducted extensive research on growing techniques and created new versions of crops that are resistant to the heat and periods of drought on the island.  Despite Puerto Rico’s urbanization, fertile land remains in abundance throughout the countryside.

To transform Puerto Rico into a sustainable entity, policies must support locally sourced products; incentives for preserving and growing on farmland must be passed into law; and a goal of dramatically increasing use of locally produced crops must be established for government programs and services, and must be adopted by supermarkets.

Investments in local consumption of locally produced crops and products is an investment in good health for everyone living on the island and a good investment in Puerto Rico.
